Dubbed the ‘patron saint of poetry’ by Carol Ann Duffy, Roger McGough brings his art, wit and verse to this exciting masterclass.
Participants will learn how to play with language through word games and tricks, patterns, metaphor and imagination. Roger will show you can draw on your own experience and originality to write the poetry of your life.
There can only be 20 places in this relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Roger will read from some of his work and talk about his process. You will bring a piece of your own poetry ( up to 12 lines ) which will be read out ( not by you ! ) and form part of our discussion.
Roger McGough, OBE and CBE for his services to poetry, shot to fame first in the 1960s as one of the Liverpool poets, and the keynote book The Mersey Sound. He has since written over 100 poetry books for adults and children. He is a compelling live performer, as those attending his recent cornerHOUSE reading will attest.
In his early poetry career, McGough sent Philip Larkin some of his work, whilst they were both at the University of Hull. Larkin said he believed McGough ‘walked an impressionistic tightrope which, though exhilarating, meant that on occasion he fell off’. Come join this, now more established, tightrope and fall off or balance as you wish – this masterclass will catch you!
This class is suitable for beginners as well as those who have been writing for longer. Roger will tailor it to suit all levels. His teaching style is playful and fun. You are guaranteed to learn and enjoy yourself at the same time.
Tea and Coffee provided; bar open after the class.
