Drama Workshop - Young Carers Project

Mon 26 Jul - Fri 13 Aug 2010

A drama workshop for young carers will be held at the cornerHOUSE in July and August.
The workshop, run by the Kingston Young Carers Project, will offer five to 18-year-old carers creative and stimulating ways of examining problems that arise from caring responsibilities.
“The aim of the drama workshop for young carers is to provide a fun-filled experience that encourages engagement, fulfilment, positive self-awareness and a real sense of success,” said young carers support worker Monika Michaliszyn.
Monika said the Kingston Young Carers Project supports children who help look after a relative who has a physical or learning disability, mental health problems or drug/alcohol abuse problems.
“Young carers, due to caring roles which would usually be taken by an adult, often suffer from emotional difficulties, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, lack of recognition, praise and respect,” she explained. “They often feel different from other children, and isolated from other children and often adults. There is a lack of time for play and fun.
“This course will increase children’s confidence and self-esteem, and also improve their relationship with family members through inviting them to the production of the drama workshop at the end of the project.”
Experienced drama teacher Paul Vitty will be in charge of the workshop. Paul has worked with children on the young carers project before. His experience includes teaching art and drama for a mental health charity and writing and delivering an educational programme on youth homelessness. He has also written plays for public shows and took part in a few film productions.
The course at the arts centre in Douglas Road, Surbiton, runs on the dates below. It is free for all young carers. It will culminate in a small show on Friday, August 13 at 5.30pm. This is an invitation-only event.
If you are a young carer who would like to know more about the workshops, or you know a young carer who could benefit from them, email enquiries@paulvitty.info for more details.
